Quiet Womans Row

A Look Back at Docks Way

To Pill People, it began as "The Old Road" and can be seen on the oldest of maps. Then as the great changes of the last four decades took place there grew a need for a link road from Pill to Maesglas - Duffryn and Tredegar Park. The single carraigway of the original road was soon out of date as the M4 reached boiling point and new industrial parks grew on the waste areas left behind by the railways. In 2003 /4 work began to expand the width and re align the course of the distributor road . A far cry from the old road to Maesglas. Ponds, reens and pig farms. Allotments and steamy shunting engines and the omnipresent aroma of pigs , creasote and things unmentionable to be found under the three railway bridges.
The work which lasted some time happily unearthed many artifacts of Victorian Pill. Tram lines opposite the Waterloo Hotel and the railway lines of the Old GWR Docks Branch. In these pictures we see South Pill , the work being carried out and what they discovered beneath the ground.
