Quiet Womans Row

1950s Newport Classic Years, trains - streets - buses and the river.

This is the start of Newport in the 1950s, the classic years that we all probably remember. Our journey begins, (top left) with the City of Truro in the departure platform at Newport Station. Belle Vue park and a packed band stand concert. A dreamy picture of the Usk and a ship moored at the coal staithes. Remember the Festival of Britain, the first post war bash, when the whole country told the rest of the world that we are still the best. ( sorry if you dont like the patriotism, crumblies like me have it for life) Then there was the era of the High Street fires. Hills and Steels to start. Did they not know it was Pill that was soon to be redeveloped?. The Whiteheads American engine was a familier sight and sound for us borne with the Pill Passport, as was the river and the Tranny bridge. The picture of the power station is actually late 1940s hence the camoflage on the chimneys. This is the start of the page, more soon. And by the way, Thanks Don for the pics, much appreciated.
